Cumbria & The Lake District: Staycation to forever location

A research report has named the borough of Eden, next door to Scalesceugh Hall & Villas' borough of Carlisle, as one of the most popular locations in the UK for relocating post-Covid within the over-55 market. A recent article in The Times also described the effect on the Baby Boomer generation, moving closer to family after the isolating effects of lockdown.

One such couple are Christine and David Sammans. Based in West Yorkshire, they were beginning to feel the strain of the 500-mile round trip to see their daughter and grandchildren in Glasgow. Keen to downsize, they had started their search several years earlier, but nothing had seemed quite right.

Christine comments: “It was my daughter that found Scalesceugh Hall & Villas. She had taken over the search, somewhat impatient to see us move, and saw this location online and the use of Miele products within the villas and just thought “wow!”

"We are very big walkers. We’ve done the Coast to Coast and Pennine Way; we’ve done all the big walks. David and I actually met walking, and my dad used to take me walking when I was little. It’s been a big part of our lives, holidays and all sorts. I do about 5 miles a day. We’ve just joined a walking group here and we’ve made new friends already.”

“We were keen to downsize, but at our last house people used to say that our garage was bigger than their house. We lived there 22 years. It was remote and on the Pennines. We could walk from the door.”

“We considered the North East, around Northumberland, but our daughter is a GP and she was insistent we were close to a good hospital and trains. Very practical. That’s why she thought it was good here. It’s close to the city, if you need anything, but you’re away from it. Now it’s warmer we can sit outside and have our breakfast and watch the deer, hares. It’s beautiful.”

David comments: “We have morning coffee every day at 11am and everyone knows they can join it. It’s a real community feel here.”
